The Best Autumn Colours to Suit Your Skin Tone

As autumn approaches, we see a stripping back of the bright neons of summer, that scream fun, vacation and festival glam; and an emergence of more sophisticated hues such as: burgundy, brown, mustard, and plum.

As our complexions begin to lose their summer glow, it's even more important to pick colours that complement your natural beauty. Of course there are no rules, when it comes to wearing whatever colour you love, but it is also no secret that certain colours, do accentuate some tones more than others.

Here’s our pick of some of the most popular Autumn/Winter colours, and how to wear them best.

Burgundy

Slapp best burgundy

A timeless classic, that can be worn all year round, for us, burgundy looks best in Autumn, just as the leaves begin to change and black feels a little too severe.

Ideal tones: All.

Burgundy brings out the red in complexions with red undertones and the richness of the near brown colour brings out the yellow in more olive tones, making it a colour that everyone should own for more versatile looks.

How to wear it:

Wear with neutral eyeshadow and big lashes, or a winged liner for a classic look that will draw the attention to the lips but make eyes look bright and refreshed. Match it with burgundy blush to make the colour pop.

Orange

Just because it's a little cold, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a pop of colour. If a bright orange doesn’t necessarily float your boat, opt for a burnt caramel, cinnamon, or a nice pumpkin spice.

Ideal tones:

This colour, especially deep or burnt orange, compliments warmer more yellow undertones more than cooler tones, but brighter orange works for all.

How to wear it:

Wear it as lipstick, with a neutral eye, or as eyeshadow to bring a subtle glow to your complexion. On lighter skin, particularly those with green, blue or hazel eyes, orange is a great enhancer. Darker skin tones can be a bit more adventurous and thinking about wearing orange as blush. You’d be surprised how much it compliments deeper tones. This is a great summer transition colour for all skin tones.

Brown

Brown is the queen of earthy colours. Dark without washing you out too much and much warmer than black.

Ideal tones: All.

This colour works well with any skin tone, depending on whether it’s being worn as a lipstick, mascara or eye shadow.

How to wear it:

Rusty brown eye shadow is a godsend for lighter skin tones, as it tends to bring out coloured eyes, and warms up cooler tones. Just be mindful, that when worn as a lipstick as it tends to make neutral and red tones look cooler and lighter skin tones look paler. We think silverish browns look best on lighter tones.

For darker skin tones, practically all shades of brown work really well, projecting an air of natural beauty, particularly when paired with a copper brown blush.

Mustard Yellow:

Mustard has become so popular this summer and there is absolutely no reason for us to hang up our mustard shadows just because the sun has forsaken us.

Ideal tones:

All, but particularly yellow and warm undertones and darker skin.

How to wear it:

In colder months this colour will work best as an eyeshadow rather than a lip colour and brings out hazel eyes nicely. Wear it as a soft cut crease if you find wearing and entire lid of yellow too much, or wear it on the lower lash line for a small but pronounced pop. Pair it with burgundy or plum to make it pop.

Purples:

The classic autumn colour ranges from a bruised berry to a popping plum.

Because of its pink tone, rather than the brown in burgundy, it looks beautiful on all skin tones, but pops particularly on warmer tones.

It looks beautiful on eyes and lips for all tones, the trick is to just find the right hue. Bright purples look great on pale and darker skin, as do raspberries and plums. For shadow, rust reds look great on fairer skin, whist darker and medium skin tones, can pretty much rock the entire spectrum.
