When it comes to beauty, there’s always a brand or product you’ve never heard of so every month we’ll be shining a light on the new brands we love, that cater to all skin tones and are available in the Slapp store. First up is Daring Dutch brand Ellis Faas.
Ellis Faas was hailed by Vogue Paris as one of the most influential makeup artists of her generation and plucked out of obscurity by Mario Testino in the late 90s. Thrown in to the deep end of fashion and soon mingling with Emmanuelle Alt and Karl Lagerfeld and troops of backstage artists at the Moschino, Chanel and Givenchy shows, Ellis knows a thing or two about makeup. You’ve probably already sampled her work; she’s advised brands like Clinique, Lancôme, MAC and L’Oréal, and her eponymous makeup line is based on the colours that naturally occur within the human body. Her whole USP is innovation, wearability and bending the beauty rules to fit you.
With an art background and self-confessed love of ‘over stylised fashion’ and ‘smearing colours on anyone willing to be a victim’, you’d expect the brand to be garishly playful, but these products are no nonsense, aerodynamic and available in a wide spectrum of blendable shades, all brimming with clean Dutch efficiency. Her desire to condense and simplify the makeup process, is perfectly demonstrated with the sleek, silver bullets that house her foundations and concealers; all designed with moisturising sheer coverage and natural polish in mind.
Blended with vitamin e, karite oil and rice wax, Faas’ base products latch on to that classic makeup-artist tip: ‘take care of your skin, and the rest will be simple’.
The Skin Veil pen can be drawn directly onto a primed face, thanks to the built in brush, whilst the bottle version looks great when dabbed in with warm fingers for light coverage. The deceptively thick looking but lightweight concealer is ideal for dealing with sleepy eyes and post-party skin troubles, and all together the products achieve a vision of dewy, youthful health.
Our absolute favourite is the Glow Up highlighting pot, housed in a rather sexy twist open silver tub, with secret mirror in the lid. It also separates so that you can actually hold your mirror as you apply without worrying about dropping and braking your compact. We’re all for a supernatural glow at the moment, so this superfine pearl formula has been making the rounds in our team and looks great on lips, cheekbones and collarbones for subtle luminosity and J-Lo vibes. Set in a charming metallic compact, what’s inside certainly lives up to its impressive outer shell. Fold the sponge in half and use the bent edge to press pigment over the face for instant prettification. Though Faas’ website is littered with imagery of models in eyelashes dripping in gloopy ‘blood’, her complexion range adds subtle radiance that evokes memories of summer mornings and sun-kissed balcony breakfasts.
