As the weather changes, so should your beauty routine. Falling temperatures and overuse of central heating, can lead to serious skincare irritation and dry skin.
So for those of us experiencing winter skincare woes, here are our top tips on how to winter-proof your skin to keep it looking fresh and flawless under makeup.
1. Switch up your cleansing routine
Swap out your cleanser for something gentler, that offers more hydration. Cleansing oils are perfect for getting rid of makeup and keeping your skin squeaky-clean without stripping them of oils.
A great, lightweight oil-based cleanser is The Body Shop’s Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil, but if you’re not a fan of oily textures and products, Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser is a great option for a gentle yet thorough wash (on non-sensitive skin!)
2. Scrub away the dead skin
Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and encourage cell regeneration, to reveal a softer and more glowing complexion.
Getting rid of all dry and dead skin means that serums, oils, balms, and moisturisers can absorb better into the skin (and do their job at peak performance). We recommend trying liquid exfoliants, such as Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA - but any BHA can do the trick.
3. Mask it
No, we don’t mean slapping on some concealer and covering up your dry, flaky bits (it wouldn’t work anyway!), dry skin yearns for intensely hydrating treatments and what better way to treat your skin to some TLC than to put on a face mask. Try applying one weekly for the best results. Milk Makeup offer the Hydrating Face Mask stick, which is perfect for a fast yet effective skin-treat.
4. Don’t forget about moisturiser!
Winter is the best time to embrace rich moisturisers and balms that will keep skin looking gorgeous, glowy and feeling soft and smooth. What we all need this season is something that prevents moisture loss and preps skin for bracing freezing temperatures (ok, maybe we’re being dramatic) and cold winter winds. Kiehls’ Ultra Facial Cream is the moisturiser of our dreams.
5. Time for Makeup!
This season, it’s best to take a step back from ultra-drying matte and opt for more natural or hydrating finishes. To ensure your skin looks its best: whether you’re racing to finish your Christmas shopping in town, or dancing the night away at the Christmas party - you’ll want something with lasting power but that offers a subtle glow.
For a budget buy, try Makeup Revolution’s Conceal and Hydrate foundation, or for Too Faced’s Dew You Foundation for dewy, medium coverage.
