Contouring Without the Kit: Perfect Products for Your Skin Tone

When it comes to contouring, choosing colours based on your skin tone is essential. If you’re contouring for the first time, it’s difficult to know where to start.

Even though many tutorials make it look complex, contouring can be really easy and doesn’t necessarily require a special kit. Using darker foundations, concealers and even eyeshadows, can help you to achieve that flawless finish.

So in order to help you up your game, here are some tips on how to contour your face, according to your skin tone.

  1. Darker Tones

Contour without a kit

Adding dimension to darker skin tones is essential. Applying highlighter on your cheekbones and forehead, are the best way to add definition to those areas. We recommend using the Vapour Organic Trick Stick in Dazzle, £17.50, or the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze, £35, will give your skin a beautiful shine. When contouring, this is the only time you’ll actually want ashy shades. Vapour Organic Luminous Foundation Stick in 160, £32 is a great dark shade with luminosity. If you’re on a budget, L.A Girl’s Pro Conceal in Espresso or Dark Cocoa, £3.89, is a tried-and-tested fail safe. Get 3 for 2 at Slappshop with code: 342.

  1. Tan Tones

Contour medium skin how to no kit

Peachy and light browns are perfect if you have medium skin. Use the Vapour Organic Luminous Foundation Stick in 130, or any shade that is slightly lighter than your skin tone, to highlight. Apply this on the middle of your forehead and use a peachy colour on the top of your forehead. We recommend the 140 shade for this, as this will add definition. To contour  we love the Charlotte Tilbury Contour Wand, £29, in either Light to Medium, or Medium to Dark, depending on how rich your complexion is.

  1. Lighter Tones

If you have fair skin, then taupes will work the best. To make it look like you have a fantastic jawline, apply the Luminous Foundation Stick in 130 or 140, to chisel your chin. Be sure to apply the darker colours only to the areas you want to define, as too much will make your skin look patchy. Use the Luminous Foundation Stick in 100, or L.A Girl in Classic Ivory, £3.89, both under and above your eyes, to cover up any dark circles. Warm pink bronzers always look fab on light skin, so apply the Bobbi Brown Brightening Brick in Pastel Peach, £32, just above your cheekbones. If you want a natural, barely-there glow, the Noto Hydra Highlight stick, £18, is perfection.
