Get the Look: New School Halloween

Halloween isn't just about witches and sexy devils any more, this year we're seeing a heap of ethereal and supernatural looks; meaning that if you're of that persuasion, you can finally ditch black and red.

We picked some of our favourite looks, inspired by the new school beauty gurus: YouTubers.

  1. Pennywise

Pennywise IT Halloween Makeup - How To Do - Slapp

It's no surprise that Pennywise looks are trending in the wake of the latest Stephen King Film IT. And, as a clown, he fits right in with the ‘classic’ feel of Halloween. But what is so great about the Pennywise look, is you don’t need to buy extra make-up, or face paint, to create it.

The Base: You can take the route of going full monster and use white face paint or just use a full coverage and long-lasting foundation like Estee Lauder's Double Wear.

Brows: Channel the original 1990s version, with throwback, thin eyebrows, or conceal your brows completely, as in the latest IT film. No fleeky brows for this look.

Eyes: A black smokey eye, paired with long, high volume lashes like Lash Unlimited’s lashes in #10. If you’re feeling full-on yellow contacts will complete the lool.

Lips: A classic red, will keep this look classic clown. We love MDMflow’s Liquid Lipstick Supreme. Line lips with Nyx’s Hot Red Lip Pencil.

Clownify: For the Pennywise look, the stars of red across the eyes and brows, (that all clown looks have,) starts from the lips. Paint the lines from the corners of your lips through to the tips of your brows either with alarge lip pencil like Nars’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Mysterious Red. Paint the tip of your nose in the same red and outline with black liner. Finish by adding diamantes to the cheeks and red glitter to your lips, to glam up the look.

  1. Fortune Teller

Fortune Teller - Halloween Makeup - How To Do - Slapp

The fortune teller look is a great shout, because it’s so easy to. For this look you want to go with more sultry and mysterious, than bloody. Keep it sexy, by using deep purples, or browns for an added sense of low-key romance.

The Base: A natural foundation like Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation, is great for this look. Use a little translucent powder and be sure to contour, bronze, and highlight to add that exotic sultriness.

Eyes: Using your chosen colour (deep purple, pink etc) start your smokey eyes, deepening the black colour as you go. Feel free to go heavy with this look and use liquid liner to really strengthen the black around the eyes. You can use Sleek's 'vintage romance' palette to achieve this. Barry M’s Dazzle Dusts or a MAC pigment pot, around your tear ducts, will give you that surreal glow.

Lips: Match your lips to the base colour on your eyes. If you’ve gone with dark purple, make your lips dark purple to match, lining them with a dark brown or black-brown liner. For this look, we love MDMflow's Vamp, lined with MAC’s Chestnut lip liner; or Nyx’s Soft Matte Lip Cream in Dubai.

  1. Mermaid

Mermaid - Halloween Makeup - How To Do - Slapp

For us, this is one of the least Halloweeny of looks, but definitely a new school fave. The great thing about this is look is there are no rules, so you can go with any colour that strikes your fancy.

The Base: A naturally luminous base, like Ellis Faas’ Skin Veil, or Nip + Fab’s Foundations, are the perfect first layer for this look. If you're going with a bright mermaid look don’t forget the liquid highlighter underneath your foundation, like Iconic London's Illuminator Drops, or alternatively Fenty Beauty's Killawatt highlighter which is a powder but looks like a liquid, would give you that killer glow..

Scales: Dust varying eyeshadow shades and glitter dust, over fishnet tights. Use darker shades to contour, and glitter shade to highlight. Focus on your cheekbones, forehead and below the neck, to bring your look some authenticity.

Eyes:  These are dependent on what colour you’ve decided to go with. If you do decide to go with the classic turquoise, apply it as a base or transition colour with a slightly darker green underneath and gradually work your way to a lighter green, using a metallic tone towards the corner of the eye. You can do a cut crease, a halo, classical shading, or just liner – the choices for this look are endless and can be achieved with whatever palette you have. If you want to truly celebrate the occasion, try Revolutions' Mermaids vs Unicorns palette. Top the look off with winged liner and long voluminous lashes

Lips: Why not go matchy matchy? If you’re going for blue MDMflow's Mas Marina, can be worn on its own, or as an ombre to go with most mermaid looks.

  1. Extraterrestrial

Galaxy - Halloween Makeup - How To Do - Slapp

Extraterrestrial make-up has come a long way since  alien green face paint and big black eyes. This Halloween 2k17 look is similar to the mermaid look, in that it's entirely up to you how you want to do this.

The Base: something glowy like Charlotte Tilbury's Light Wonder. Pair with the Wonder Glow primer, for maximum impact.

The Sky: The classic look is a night sky which is often a deep purple, but you can also make it much lighter with blues and pinks for more of a twilight sky look.

Blend and stipple this subtle pinks and blues with a makeup sponge to create your night sky. The final layer of your sky, in this case, should be your lightest lilac. You can also dust it with glitter and highlighter which you would bring down to highlight your nose. And you can get your purple or blue highlighter from Makeup Revolution to keep with the sky look. The finishing touch would be your stars which you would paint on with white face paint or a champagne highlight.

Eyes: Apply winged black liner and a slither of glitter, along with long dark lashes. In this case, wispy lashes work better, so try Eylure's Gimme Gimme, from their new Most Wanted range.

Lips:  Nude colours, like MDMflow's Liquid Lipstick New Nude are ideal, so as not to distract from the rest of the look. Be sure to add a highlighter over them to keep with the starry theme. Or try a metallic matte lipstick like Smashbox's Be Legendary Metals range, to add to your galactic glamour.
